Kennel "Black Orange´s" -Sweden

Introduction:

My name is Susann Olhage and I breed Pomeranian under the kennelname “Black Orange´s”, you can visit my homepage at www.blackoranges.se . I am also the owner of the most visited dogblog in Sweden named Dog News http://blogg.aftonbladet.se/11171 was inspired by my first and second Pomeranian, which were black and orange to the colour, when I choose the name for my kennel. My ownbred juniormale Black Orange'd Limited Edition aka Tiger became Junior World Winner -08 and went BIS junior at the World Championship in Sweden. Tiger was the most winning Swedish bred Pomeranian at the World Dog Show 2008, I am very prod to be Tigers breeder and owner.

Today I live in Sweden with my husband Håkan and my two daughters, Charlene 21 year and Zabrina 20 year, but I was originally born and grown up in Finland. My family and I live on the westcoast in a place named Särö about 30km south of Gothenburg, which lies near the sea. All of our dogs are treated as familymembers and they even sleep in our bedroom. I make sure that we do not have more than 4-6 dogs at the same time, because I want to be able to give them equal attention and all the caring love that they need. It is not the quantity, but the quality that counts. My interest in dogs, especially dogs of Spitzbreeds was strong already when I was a child. Our neighbour had a Finnish Spitz, which is used in hunting. I often played with that dog and I even pretended that it was my own. Unfortunately my parents did not want a dog even though I begged and pleaded for one.

When and how you get the idea for going in the activity of breeding Pomeranians?

I have been in Pomeranian for over 15 years now, all thing started one day in 1993 when I was out walking with my children I met a lady with an orange coloured Pomeranian. It was the very first time I saw a Pomeranian and I was fascinated by the little creature with big fur. I did not know what kind of breed it was and the lady was in a hurry so she could not help me. So I visited the public library and found a book about different dog breeds. I read all about Pomeranians and then called the Finnish Kennel Club to find out which breeders had puppies for sale at the moment. I was given several phone numbers but none of them who I called wanted to sell a puppie to a family with small children of ages 6 and 5. I only had one breeder left to call, the late Marjatta Heinonen owner of Kennel Tiny Doll´s in Helsinki Finland and from that moment my luck was about to turn. I was very happy when Marjatta invited me to her kennel the following day. I knew in advance that I wanted an orange coloured dog, I was sure of it. As my children and I came to Kennel Tiny Doll´s, we were met by 30 dogs, 15 Poms and 15 Chihuahuas all of them barking and jumping around our feets.

While talking with Marjatta I watched the dogs and to my disappointment there were only a few orange coloured dogs. Despite that I was still charmed by a 5 year-old female Pom, which was black and named Black Bessie at Tiny Doll´s “Bessie”, already a Finnish Champion. Bessie was imported from England and was offspring of Great Britain Champion Zentarr Mark.I was taken away by Bessie and she immediately got a special place in my heart. The visit ended with me going home with Bessie and I was very much attached to the dog just like everyone else became when they met her.In 1995 I decided to cover her with a creme coloured male because I hoped that the offsprings maybe would be light orange or cream coloured.. Three black puppies were born and I was disappointed but I learned something about colours too.

How many dogs do you have currently?
Me with Tiger winning BOB junior at World Championship last summer, Jugde: Kasemsanta Apiwut, Thailand

I have two males Junior World Winner -08 Black Orange's Limited Edition aka Tiger, Tigers offspring Black Orange's Wild Card, and three females, Black Orange's Royal Straight Flush, Black Orange's All In and Tigers offspring Black Orange's Beyond The Limit.

How do you decide which male to choose for your females?
It is a long story, I do plans for many years and choose males very well before I decide to mate a female
What are the bloodlines you preffer?
In my dogs pedigrees there are dogs with the old english bloodlines from the kennel Cynpeg, which I have mixed with Canadian bloolines. This combination have worked for me. My ideal Pomeranian is a dog with high rising, short back, high tailset, good mover and a head with a foxyface.
I do not want a Pomeranian who is too heavy and looks like a Chow Chow

Is there something specific in taking care of the little babies?
A newborn Pomeranianpuppy is very small so you have to look after the mother and be sure that the puppies get enough of milk. It is a hard work to bred this little lovely bred.

Tigers first offspring Sixten 4,5 months old

How do you choose the owners of the Pomeranian babies?
I am a small breeder and bred puppies for my self for showing, sometimes I have to sell a puppy or an adult, I usually sell to sombody I know very well

Are you in contact with them?

I am very closed with my puppybuyers, so I get pictures and emails very often from them. It is the best way to learn about your ownbred puppies, to see them grow up and learn about how the pedigree turns out to be.
What are the problems that you find in your activity?
I wish that more breeders could be honest with each other and for example tell about what diseases may lie behind their bloodlines.

It would definitly be positive to the breed and it would help us achive a healthier dog.I myself have chosen to share to all my readers on my blog that two of my dogs that where born in 2001 have Cushings. Unfortunately this was not appreciated by all the breeders. No breeder wants to breed sick dogs, but by beeing honest and open about which diseases lies in ones dogs genes we can prevent furture spread of the illness and focus on breeding healthy dogs. Instead of thinking of the best of the Pomeranian breed, many breeders take these things too personally. I believe that to become a good breeder you have to think more about the dogs than you think on yourself.

Did you sometimes think to give up because of these reasons?
No, because I love Pomeranians and I can't live without them.
What health problems the pomeranians experience most often?

BSD (Black Skin Disease), other skinproblems, cushings, heartproblems, patella, Legg Clavé PerthesI think BSD is the worst right now.

Are there any inherited genetic problems that all puppies should be tested for?

Patella

What do you think about the pomerniranian grooming?

I love grooming Pomeranians, it is the best thing with them..LOL. Grooming a Pom is not so easy and you have to learn it before you will start with shows

How do you prepare yourself and your dogs for the showring?

Is there any secret you would like to share? I am always thinking that I have the best groomed dogs, it is very important to me to groom the dogs as well as possible. Don't go to the showring with a dog in bad coat, don't show a dog if the dog is not in great condition.

From you point of view what would be the future of the Pomeranian breed?

What will be its development?Breeders have to be honest about diseases, or then we will soon have a big problem with skinproblems.

What are your advices for the people that intend to choose Pomeranian?

I would like to recommend for those who are thinking of buying a Pomeranian to visit dog shows and contact breeders before one decide which kind of Pomeranian one would like to buy. It is important to think of what the purpose of the dog is, is it going to be used for dog shows or as a pet? Me myself was very surprised over the differences between show dogs and dogs that do not qualify as a show dog. One could easily believe that the different dogs are not even the same breed. Tough, it can be difficult to buy a dog of show quality if its purpose is to be a pet for the family. Breeders often want to sell a dog like that to people that are interested in dog shows.
